Final stint disaster cost points – Sainz

Carlos Sainz Jr suffered a pointless Mexican Grand Prix as he carried his Toro Rosso home to finish 13th. The Spaniard spoke of how he could’ve added to his championship tally had the safety car on lap 52 not been deployed:

“It was a bit of a disaster in the last stint compared to previous. The first two were going at a good pace and we kept in the points,” Carlos, 21, explained.

“I was not allowed [to go faster] with the engine and brakes, and then we lost a second or half second per lap after stopping with the new tires after SC”.

Until the safety car, Sainz appeared to be challenging the Force India’s for the low-end points positions, however when the safety car was deployed, Carlos fell back from the Force Indias, the lotus duo, Marcus Ericson and even fell into the clutches of Jenson Button.

On the cool-down lap race-engineer, Marco Matassa, told Sainz: “P13, P13. Very difficult race for us, but you did a good job”. Carlos replied: “We had the pace to score points today, we just didn’t do anything right, I think.”
