Esteban Gutierrez is set to be announced as the second driver at the Haas Formula One team for next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Gene Haas was asked about when the partner to Romain Grosjean will be confirmed to which Haas replied: “We’re going to make the announcement for our second driver in Mexico City on Friday night”. Haas was then asked if that reveals anything and the team owner responded “well I think you can figure that one out”.
The confirmation of the second driver announcement on Friday in Mexico City all but verifies the paddock consensus that Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez will indeed be alongside Romain Grosjean in 2016. Gutierrez has been a reserve driver for the Scuderia Ferrari team this season and with the Haas Formula One team entering into partnership with Ferrari for the supply of power units, it has been widely expected that the Mexican driver would join the new team into the sport for their debut season.
Gutierrez previously raced for Sauber in 2013 and 2014 where he scored just six points but did manage to set one fastest lap in his maiden season in Formula One. The Mexican’s best qualifying was eighth at the 2013 Korean Grand Prix and just one week later at the Japanese Grand Prix secured his best result in the sport so far with a seventh place finish.
