Ferrari considering engine upgrade for Austin

With Mercedes wrapping up the constructors title at Sochi last week, Ferrari have taken into consideration using their remaining tokens towards a fifth engine at the United States Grand Prix.

Ferrari’s new update is speculated to include changes to the location of the oil tank and MGU-K, which will help to make the rear of the car narrower and provide an aerodynamic boost for the Italian team. A new gearbox will also be required.

Sebastian Vettel’s slim chance of the driver’s championship could mean team mate Kimi Raikkonen, who is out of title contention, is likely to use the engine first and experience the grid penalties that accompany it.

“We are thinking about in Austin. Of course the situation with Seb second in the championship must be considered, but we have to do our calculation about what we have in the end before taking any kind of decision.” Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene told Motorsport.com.
