The Russian Grand Prix saw Jenson Button finish in the points. It was a 9th place finish for the British driver who said: “Today, we did everything right, did the best we could”.
Yet again fans witnessed a lack of pace from the McLaren-Honda cars, meaning Button and Alonso couldn’t really race against anyone else in the field.
Button had out-qualified his teammate Fernando Alonso and remained ahead of the Spaniard throughout the race. Although he was up to 9th position by the first lap Button struggled to keep other cars behind him saying: “I was a sitting duck for the first couple of laps”.
McLaren’s race fight paid off with both driver’s finally finishing in the points, post race Button said: “Still, it wasn’t bad. I was racing Fernando for the whole race, which was all I could really do, as all the other cars were quicker”.
Button’s deployment issue on the McLaren made it easy for others cars to pass him as it would cut off on the straights. Button said “That was tricky: they were trying to pass me into Turn 13, which is a pretty scary place, especially when you don’t have DRS and can’t gauge the closing speed of the cars behind”.
Following a weekend of little improvement in performance Button said: “we did lots of interesting things with the set-up this weekend. We’ll analyse those and see whether they paid off or not.”
