Heading into this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix Jenson Button was hoping for an improved weekend with his McLaren Honda.
Friday’s practice session was cut short for Button after a cooling leak and Saturday’s qualifying saw the Brit just miss out on Q2 by two tenths of a second. The qualifying result was much better than the team and indeed Button had expected. Button started the race at Monza in 15th place and ahead of his team mate, Fernando Alonso.
At the start of the race Button made up places in the field and by lap two was up to 10th place. “I had a good start, and took some cars into Turn One”.
Following the round of pit stops and of the race dramas, fans witnessed some great racing between Button and Verstappen, and Button and his team mate. Button finished the race in a respectable 14th place. “At the end, I missed out on a good race with my team mate . . it’s not easy for us to overtake each other, so it would’ve been quite fun.”
As thoughts move to the next race on the calendar Button is hopeful for a better weekend in Singapore with the possibility of championship points.
All in all Monza was a difficult weekend for McLaren Honda team. Button concluded “it all could have been worse – that’s the way you have to look at it”.
