Williams “can’t afford mistakes” like tyre mix-up – Bottas

Valtteri Bottas says Williams have to get rid of mistakes like the mix-up of tyres at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Bottas was the victim of a rare error where his team put two different tyre compounds on his car after his first stint, which resulted in him getting a drive through and demoted him down the order.

The Finn, who ultimately came home in ninth, commented that such mistakes from Williams are costly and cannot take place again if they are going to get a good haul of points for the Constructors Championship.

“We can’t afford mistakes like this,” Bottas told AUTOSPORT . “It is another weekend which we need to learn from and we need to make sure we don’t do this kind of mistake again.”

Whilst the tyre mix-up costed him more points the Williams driver pointed out that his car lacked the speed needed to fight at the front in Spa.

“We definitely didn’t get 100 per cent of the weekend. We just didn’t have the pace to challenge the guys in front.”

“But we should have got more points than what we did.”

Part of that is down to the inability of the FW37 to get the option tyre in the right operating window according to Bottas.

“I didn’t get enough temperature into the tyres at the start and it took quite a few laps for them to warm-up,” he added.

“As the option tyre is a high working range tyre, that’s the weak point for us.

“The option tyre did not work as well as we were hoping for. We were expecting the prime to be the worst tyre, but today it was the better tyre.”

“There is some reason for it, we need to find it.”
