Pirelli claims teams disobeyed 2013 tyre recommendations

Pirelli claims that Formula 1 teams disobeyed recommendations made from 2013 on limits on the use of tyres.

Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel vented their frustrations out on the Italian tyre manufacturer after the latter suffered a sudden tyre blowout on the penultimate lap of yesterday’s Belgian Grand Prix when en route to a podium finish.

Pirelli responded via an official statement released on their website, stating that advice given to teams on the maximum length a driver should race on a set of tyres for was ignored:

In November 2013, Pirelli requested that there should be rules to govern the maximum number of laps that can be driven on the same set of tyres, among other parameters to do with correct tyre usage. This request was not accepted. The proposal put forward a maximum distance equivalent to 50% of the grand prix distance for the prime tyre and 30% for the option. These conditions, if applied today at Spa, would have limited the maximum number of laps on the medium compound to 22.

Such limits were imposed on the teams in response to the various tyre problems experienced throughout the 2013 season, among the limits provided on camber settings to prevent such tyre blowouts.

The statement obviously insinuates that Vettel, having spent the best part of 27 laps on his medium tyres, exceeded the fixed limit for Spa.
