Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo believes he can overtake former team-mate Sebastian Vettel in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Ricciardo was beaten to P3 in Q3 today by just 0.096s by Vettel.
Although he suffered a engine failure just five laps into his long run on Friday, the Australian believes that his first podium finish is on the cards tomorrow.
“I think we’ve a chance, I really do,” said Ricciardo. “[Ferrari] were a long way off the pace yesterday, in low and high fuel, so it’s really hard to assess where they are, because obviously they showed a lot more speed today.
“Our long run-pace yesterday was pretty handy so I’m confident we can nail them tomorrow. I think the race will be strong for us.”
Ricciardo said he was pleased with his qualifying performance and equalled his best starting position of the season from Malaysia and Monaco.
“I was really happy with the session, to be honest,” he added.
“It was really close and I thought the lap was good enough, I was expecting my engineer to say I’d got top-three. But it was half a tenth to Seb.
“Obviously we’ve had a few problems this weekend, but as a team it’s been our most solid so far.”
