Wehrlein tops extended test session in Austria

CIL6GHKUkAAU-pwPascal Wehrlein has topped the opening day of testing at the Red Bull Ring in Austria which was severely affected by heavy rain in the morning.

The morning session was halted by heavy rain thus no cars were allowed to run until after the lunch break.

With two hours remaining, Wehrlein set his fastest time of the day in the W06 where he completed 67 laps in total. The 20-year old will hand over to fellow German and 2015 Austrian Grand Prix winner, Nico Rosberg on Wednesday.

Esteban Ocon was in the VJM08 as they launched their B-Spec package for the first time. Ocon, who is currently competing in the GP3 series was second fastest and completed 76 laps in the upgraded Force India.

Max Verstappen was third fastest as he evaluated Toro Rosso’s new upgrade package which made its début on Sunday.

Antonio Fuoco crashed his Ferrari at turn one however was unharmed. The Italian had covered 70 laps and set the fourth fastest time – three tenths off the pace.

Romain Grosjean was fifth fastest ahead of fellow Frenchman Pierre Gasly who drove for Red Bull. Gasly’s first taste of F1 action took place at the first mid-season test in Barcelona earlier this year.

Raffaele Marciello completed 53 laps in the C34. The Italian ended up eighth fastest ahead of McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne and Williams’ Susie Wolff.
