Fernando Alonso believes that McLaren should move beyond their challenging 2015 campaign and switch their attention to 2016.

The first year of the revived McLaren-Honda partnership has yielded in perennial reliability problems, mainly on the power unit side. With Alonso bearing the brunt of the majority of the troubles.

The Spaniard has failed to finish in all but two of the races he has started, having also skipped the season-opener in Australia following his crash in pre-season testing. His team-mate Jenson Button hasn’t been spared of many of the problems that have blighted their season despite giving the Honda-powered MP4-30 its first points of the year in Monaco.

With McLaren suffering yet another double retirement in Canada two weeks ago, Alonso concedes that the 2016 McLaren-Honda package should be the highest on the priority list.

“With the position we are in and the performance we have, I think concentrating on next year is the clever option for us now,” the 34-year old told AUTOSPORT.

“I don’t have any problem starting every single race from the pit lane if we keep improving the car.

“That’s the main priority now, to concentrate on next year’s performance, so let’s see what the team can offer.

“I do think the progress has been quite amazing until now, so the second part of the season is a question mark for us, but we are all very optimistic,”
