Lewis Hamilton set the pace in the opening practice session in Montreal ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg.
At a circuit which has brought Hamilton a lot of success over recent seasons, Hamilton looked right on the pace from the off and was four tenths quicker than Rosberg.
It was not all plain sailing for the reigning world champion as he spun at the hairpin.
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve consists of long straights which require a strong power unit thus it was no surprise to see Mercedes power dominate the standings.
Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg were the surprises of the session as they set the third and fourth quickest times.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was fifth fastest whilst team-mate Raikkonen struggled and ended up twelfth fastest.
After an abysmal Monaco Grand Prix, Williams looked to be back on form as Massa was sixth fastest.
Toro Rosso and Red Bull struggled for pace as Daniil Kvyat was the highest placed Renault runner in seventh.
Sauber struggled in the opening practice session in Montreal – Nasr was sixteenth fastest ahead of Ericsson in eighteenth .
All the drivers completed their fastest times on the yellow-marked soft tyres before testing the red-marked super-soft tyres in second practice later today.
