Mercedes Executive Director, Toto Wolff, has spoken about the possibility of splitting the strategies of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to fend off the challenge from Ferrari.

Wolff told Sky Sports F1: “We have always considered if it was about winning the race about splitting the strategy with one car,”

Mercedes also split strategies with their drivers last year to give the driver behind an opportunity to win, leading to some close racing between the two in races such as Bahrain.

“But of course that caused a lot of controversy last year when it works out for one car, but not the other and then you are being blamed”

“This year it seems that Ferrari have caught up and if we need to split the strategy in order to secure a race win then we will do that.”

Mercedes topped both practice sessions on Friday but Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen showed good long-run pace towards the end of FP2.

“We did an okay long run with Lewis, it was again an impressive long run from Ferrari, so it is a work in progress.”
