The FIA has granted Honda to develop their power unit throughout the 2015 Formula 1 season.

Honda was originally excluded by the sport’s governing body from making changes to their power unit in-season, with the new engine manufacturer’s homologation date fixed on February 28.

With the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault having the freedom to make improvements, the Japanese company appeared unhappy.

But after discussions with the FIA in a meeting this week, Honda have been made eligible to develop their power unit although will be limited to the amount of engine development tokens left to spare from the other engine suppliers after homologation.

An FIA document from race director Charlie Whiting said: “We will allow the new manufacturer to use the same number of tokens that the other three manufacturers have available to them, taken as an average of the three,”

“For example, if the three 2014 manufacturers have eight, seven and five unused tokens respectively at the start of the season, then the new manufacturer will be allowed to use six during the season (the average rounded down to the nearest whole number).”
