A new super license points system is to be put into place by Formula Ones’ governing body – the FIA. The new regulations are set to take effect at the start of the 2016 season. The rules will make it more difficult for drivers to reach the highest level of Motorsport.
The rules state, that in order to become eligible to race in Formula One, drivers must have acquired at least 40 points in another Motorsport series as well as being at least 18 years of age.
Other requirements include; two years experience in a junior single seater series, a valid road drivers license must be held, and they must pass an assessment based on Formula One sporting regulations. Previously, one of the only prerequisites t
o becoming a driver at the highest level was to have completed 300km in a recent Formula One car. This requirement still applies.
Had this rule been made official for the 2015 season, Toro Rosso rookie Max Verstappen would not have been eligible to compete. This being due to his age, and the fact he only obtained 20 points in the 2014 FIA F3 championship.
On a personal note, I believe this is a good move by Formula One. It now means that drivers can let their skill, and talent do the talking.
