Daniel Ricciardo is certain that his Red Bull team can gain on the dominant Mercedes team this year.
The world champions were often in a league of their own during the 2014 campaign from start to finish, winning all but the three races that were won by Ricciardo himself. With Red Bull being considerably behind on performance, and most notably, reliability as early as pre-season testing.
Ricciardo however believes that the former world champions can reduce the performance deficit to Mercedes in the 2015 campaign.
“I’ve got faith we can close the gap,” the Australian said.
“Looking back at Melbourne, we missed all the testing and we got second [before being disqualified] – or at least we were up the front.
“Obviously Mercedes continued to get stronger, which is not what we were hoping.”
The three-time race winner reckons that such was the dominance of Mercedes that they’ve left themselves with little to improve on. And that the opposite applies to his Milton-Keynes based square especially with a better pre-season under their belt than the last.
“I would like to think that now that they have caressed that pinnacle and we feel we have a lot more to gain.” said Ricciardo.
“With a strong winter, which is pretty much inevitable, we should definitely close the gap. I have faith that we can do something to close it.”
