Lewis Hamilton firmly believes that his championship challenge is still very much on despite the setbacks he’s endured throughout the 2014 campaign.
Hamilton’s bid for a second world championship has been stiffled by unreliability and driver mistakes, mostly in qualifying, while retiring in Australia, Canada and most recently Spa. Leaving him to claw back big points deficits to championship leader and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
The Briton stood on the top step of the podium in Monza last weekend for the sixth time this season to close the gap to Rosberg in the championship to 22 points heading into the flyaway races succeeding the European stage of the season.
The second flyaway season kicks off at Singapore and Hamilton is determined to maximise the number of points on offer in the remaining six races.
“With Nico coming second [at Monza] I haven’t been able to close the gap too much – but there’s still plenty of points to be won and I’m glad to have taken a step forwards,” said Hamilton, who is looking to conquer the Singapore streets for a second time.
“Despite the highs and lows, I’m still well and truly in the hunt for the championship and that is something that gives me huge motivation for the final six races – starting in Singapore.”
