Ferrari team principal Marco Mattiacci referred to Ferrari’s disappointing performance on race day at Monza as “a day to forget”.
The Italian marque’s struggle for raw speed was reflected both during qualifying and on race day on home soil after some promise for the Tifosi showed in practice sessions.. With Fernando Alonso enduring his first retirement of the season and his first classified mechanical-related retirement for the team due to an ERS failure, while Kimi Raikkonen managed to scrap two points.
Ferrari also conceded 3rd place in the constructors championship to Williams, who accumulated 27 points to Ferrari’s paltry return of 2 points, their worst points return at the track in a decade after 2005.
While there was anticipation for Ferrari to be eclipsed by most Mercedes-powered teams in Spa and Monza, Mattiacci believes he is in no place to hide the disappointment of the team’s showing in front of their home crowd.
“In F1, as in sport in general, there are days to forget. This was certainly one of them,” he said.
“Even though we are making progress, we knew these last two races would be very difficult, so while it’s impossible to accept a result like this, our only thought is to get back to being competitive as soon as possible.
“I’m sure the working practices put in place these last few months will help us get back to the top.”
