After a string of unsuccessful campaigns and the loss of megastar driver Lewis Hamilton to Mercedes it was no surprise that Vodafone threw in the towel at McLaren at the end of last season. With ever increasing costs and no title sponsor agreement in place you would think McLaren would be counting the pennies. Despite this the Woking based outfit insists it is not concerned about the absence of a title sponsor this season.
Ron Dennis had previously stated the car would “definitely feature a title sponsor at some time in the next few races”, but as we approach the tenth round of the season no formal announcement has been made.
When asked for an update on the situation, racing director Eric Boullier said: “We will announce it when we sign it and obviously it’s because we haven’t finalised. We are not in a position where we are struggling to get money, we are perfectly fine and with Honda coming on board we are even more secure.”
Boullier went on to echo the thoughts of many pundits by admitting the team’s recent performances had not helped, but said he was not concerned about the teams finances.
“There is no one reason. If you delay it’s because there is nothing to sign or be ready to be signed. Obviously performance doesn’t help, the economic situation outside is not the best, but McLaren has 32 partners and sponsors, so on this one we have the biggest budget we have ever had and it’s going to increase next year. This is not a worry.
