Nico Rosberg topped the timesheets for the first practice session of the British Grand Prix ahead of home hero Lewis Hamilton.
Fernando Alonso was the closest challenger to the Mercedes albeit one second down on Rosberg’s pace.
Susie Wolff became the first women to take part in a Formula One weekend in 22 years as she replaced Valtteri Bottas. Her session was cut short as she had to stop on track due a oil pressure problem. Fortunately for Wolff, she will be back in action next time out in Hockenheim.
There were also several driver changes with Robin Frijns, Giedo van der Garde and Daniel Juncadella taking part in the first practice session of the weekend.
Williams’ session got even worse as Felipe Massa spun on the exit of Stowe corner which left his Williams in the barrier meaning the Brazilian could not run again in FP1.
Silverstone looks to suit Red Bull more than their home track in Austria with Daniel Ricciardo setting the fourth quickest time of the session. The first man out on track Kevin Magnussen set the most laps of the session completing 2000 laps in his McLaren.
Grosjean was twelfth fastest indicating the Silverstone circuit suits the Lotus E21 more so compared to the Red Bull Ring. Teammate Maldonado failed to set a time.
At his home Grand Prix, Max Chilton was a second down from Jules Bianchi who set the sixteenth quickest time of the session.
