Ferrari head to Brazil with a decision to make over how Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are allowed to race after their first-lap battle contributed to a missed victory in Mexico City.

Hamilton called for “serious talks” after the pair fought while running first and second, while team principal Fred Vasseur said Ferrari would address the issue before this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix.

Mexico exposes Ferrari problem

Hamilton started from pole and led into the opening corners, with Leclerc moving past George Russell to give Ferrari the top two positions.

Leclerc then attacked Hamilton at Turn Four, and both ran off the circuit, with Leclerc cutting across the grass and emerging ahead. The loss of momentum allowed Max Verstappen to pass Hamilton and split the Ferraris. Leclerc was later given a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Verstappen went on to win, Hamilton recovered to second, and Leclerc finished fourth.

For Ferrari, the concern was less about the penalty than the opportunity lost. The team had reached Turn Four in control of the race before the battle between its drivers changed the order.

Hamilton said afterwards that Ferrari had been capable of a one-two and argued that the drivers needed to consider the wider team when racing each other. Leclerc accepted his penalty was deserved but defended his decision to race Hamilton, saying the situation became more complicated once Verstappen moved between them.

Brazil could test Ferrari again

Vasseur stopped short of blaming either driver but made clear he was unhappy with how the situation developed. He said racing for Ferrari also meant representing the people working for the team and confirmed the matter would be discussed before São Paulo.

That conversation matters because Mexico suggested Ferrari could again be fighting at the front in Brazil. Hamilton took pole and finished second, while Leclerc had topped both Friday practice sessions. Interlagos also offers plenty of scope for the issue to return. Its short lap produces tight qualifying margins, and the run into the Senna S can put team-mates into direct competition from the start.

Ferrari does not necessarily need a number-one driver, but it does need clearer rules if Hamilton and Leclerc find themselves fighting for the same piece of track again. That could mean firmer instructions on the opening lap or a clearer procedure for returning positions when one driver gains an advantage.

Vasseur’s preference has been to allow his drivers to race, but Mexico showed the potential cost when both believe victory is available. Ferrari appears quick enough for the question to matter again at Interlagos. If Hamilton and Leclerc line up near the front in Brazil, how they race each other could be every bit as important as their pace.
