# What Kimi Antonelli needs to win the F1 world title in Mexico

**Kimi Antonelli can become Formula 1 world champion for the first time at Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix – and the equation is simple.**

The Mercedes driver needs to finish ninth or higher to guarantee the [F1](https://readmotorsport.com/latest-f1-news/) title regardless of what George Russell or Lewis Hamilton achieve at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Antonelli arrives in Mexico with 365 points, 123 ahead of Mercedes team-mate Russell and 124 clear of Ferrari’s Hamilton. With 125 points remaining across the final five races, they are the only two drivers still mathematically capable of catching him.

## What Antonelli needs to become world champion

Ninth place is worth two points, so any finish inside the top nine will make Antonelli world champion regardless of the result elsewhere. He could even secure the title without scoring. If Antonelli finishes outside the points or retires, he will still be champion provided neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the race.

Tenth place would also be enough if Hamilton wins, with only a Russell victory in that scenario keeping the championship alive for Brazil. It leaves the 20-year-old on the verge of becoming the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history in only his second season.

Antonelli has led the standings since the Japanese Grand Prix and has built a commanding lead during a campaign featuring nine victories, 15 podiums and seven pole positions from the opening 18 races. His latest victory came in Austin last weekend, where he started from pole and won. Russell’s eighth place and Hamilton’s fourth prevented him from clinching the championship at the first opportunity, but left the Italian needing only two more points.

Mexico is therefore much simpler. Antonelli does not need to win, reach the podium or worry about results elsewhere if he finishes ninth or better. Do that on Sunday, and the 2026 Formula 1 world championship is his.
