# Ralf Schumacher: F1 could ‘shut down’ F2 if drivers race until 45

**Ralf Schumacher says Formula 1 risks squeezing young drivers out of the sport if careers stretching into the mid-40s become increasingly common.**

The former Williams and Toyota driver pointed to Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Hulkenberg while discussing the lack of seats available to drivers trying to make the step up from Formula 2. Schumacher stressed that he likes seeing experienced drivers remain in F1, but believes longer careers are creating a problem for the next generation.

“If they were to carry on racing until they’re 45, then you might as well shut down Formula 2 straight away,” Schumacher said on Sky Germany’s *Backstage Boxengasse* podcast.

“At some point, there is simply no room left for the young drivers. You have to be a little careful about that.”

## Only one rookie set for 2027

Schumacher used Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen as examples of drivers who reached F1 as teenagers and could potentially remain on the grid for decades. Alonso is 45, Hamilton is 41, and Hulkenberg will turn 40 next year. Schumacher described their longevity as impressive but “a little unfair” on younger drivers waiting for an opportunity.

The route from F2 has become difficult even for champions. Gabriel Bortoleto, the 2024 winner, reached F1, while Felipe Drugovich, Theo Pourchaire and Leonardo Fornaroli have yet to start a Grand Prix. There will still be a new face on the 2027 grid. Haas have confirmed 21-year-old Rafael Câmara on a multi-year deal, with the Brazilian set to become the only rookie currently confirmed for next season.

Câmara’s promotion comes after winning Formula 3 as a rookie in 2025 and leading this year’s F2 championship.
