Fernando Alonso: Barcelona Fans Inspired My 2027 Aston Martin Deal

Fernando Alonso confirmed on Tuesday that he has extended his contract with Aston Martin into 2027, ending speculation over his racing future. Aston Martin announced his deal extension the same day, confirming the Fernando Alonso 2027 contract will keep him racing until he turns 46.

Fernando Alonso Explains Turning Point Behind 2027 Extension

Speaking to Spanish outlet AS, in an interview reported by Crash.net, Alonso explained the thinking behind his decision. Asked whether support from home fans played a part, he did not hesitate.

“Very much so, especially Barcelona,” Alonso said. “I have to say it was a turning point.”

He said the emotion of that weekend, rather than any number on a contract, was what pushed him to keep racing.

“I hadn’t made the decision, nor had I stopped to think about it, but when I was at the fan forum, which was the most special moment of the weekend, it really touched me to see all the fans,” Alonso said.

Barcelona Fan Reception Recharged Spanish Driver in Formula 1

This is not the first time Barcelona has shaped Alonso’s thinking about his future; he made his previous Barcelona comments before signing this extension. This year, though, he said the reception carried a different kind of energy.

“They believe in me; their passion for Formula 1 and my results remains undiminished,” Alonso said.

He added that fans at the circuit did not treat the race as a farewell for their local hero.

“My impression at that moment in Barcelona was that people weren’t there to enjoy the grand prix as if it were my last, but rather they were excited as if it were the beginning of my career,” Alonso said.

Alonso also pointed to the lasting pull of what fans in Spain still refer to as Alonsomania.

“The flame of ‘Alonsomania’ and F1 in Spain is very much alive,” he said. “I certainly didn’t see any decline or a sense of nostalgia from anyone.”

He summed up the mood with a football comparison.

“Everyone was fully engaged, as if we were tied at zero and the game was at halftime. I didn’t think we were in extra time,” Alonso said.

Aston Martin Retains Veteran Presence Beyond Engine Rule Changes

The extension keeps Alonso in Aston Martin’s line-up through the rest of this rules cycle and into the years that follow. Rather than turning to a younger option, the team has chosen continuity, sticking with the most experienced driver on the grid.

Formula 1 heads into a new engine era from next season, and Aston Martin will make that transition with Alonso still in the car. The deal makes no promises beyond that; it simply confirms he will be part of the team’s plans through 2027.

Alonso Sets Sights on Continuing Formula 1 Career to Age 46

Asked directly whether the Fernando Alonso 2027 contract would be his last, he gave a clear answer.

“No, I don’t think this will be my last year in Formula 1,” he said.

He explained why he still believes he has more to give at this stage of his career.

“That’s how I see it. I’m enjoying it now; I’m efficient with travel and commitments, with marketing… I have more experience now, and I’m better organised. I think I can continue for several more years,” Alonso said.

Alonso will be 46 when this contract runs out, extending a Formula 1 career that already spans more than two decades. By his own account, the reception in Barcelona is why he never seriously weighed stepping away.
