Lando Norris demands race ban for Franco Colapinto

Lando Norris Demands FIA Ban Following Baku Incident

Lando Norris has called for Franco Colapinto to be handed a one-race ban after the Alpine driver ended his Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Lando Norris Franco Colapinto flashpoint came on a safety car restart at Turn 1 in Baku. Colapinto locked up, hit teammate Pierre Gasly, and collected Norris’s McLaren in the process.

Norris did not hold back when he spoke to written media after the race. Lando Norris told Crash.net: “I think the FIA should be more strict and start handing out bans for this kind of stuff.” He added, “It’s just careless from people. Costs a lot of money.”

“I’ve not seen it, but I mean if you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban.”

Norris was blunt about the wider standard of driving he feels the incident exposed. “All my parts are in the bin now, so yeah, people should just get banned because that’s not driving that deserves to be in Formula 1,” he said.

Official Penalty Details and Steward Findings from Azerbaijan

The stewards investigated the collision and handed Colapinto a 10-second time penalty for causing it. Since the Argentine had already retired from the race, the sanction could not be applied on track. It was instead converted into a five-place grid penalty for his next race, according to penalty details confirmed after the race.

The fallout from Baku spread beyond the stewards’ room. Alpine boss Flavio Briatore threatened a media blackout. The threat came after Pierre Gasly and his family were targeted with online abuse from Argentinian fans following the incident.

Baku Turn 1 Errors and McLaren Tactical Setback

Norris’s afternoon had already gone wrong well before the Colapinto clash. He dropped down the order early after making a mistake under braking for Turn 1. McLaren’s straightline speed then left him exposed on the long Baku straights.

“I was just slow. Just struggling a lot in the straights; you saw how quickly everyone came past me,” Norris said. “So, just an impossible race for me from that side and straightline speed today.” He added a note of hope for the team’s next outing: “So, hopefully they’ll get that fixed for next time.”

Even so, Norris accepted his own error played a part before the Colapinto incident ended his race outright. “But, otherwise I still made the mistake. And, at the end of the day, I still got taken out – just some drivers that shouldn’t be in Formula 1, to be honest.” The result is a blow to a campaign that had shaped up around Norris’s title race prospects. A zero score in Baku will not help his cause.

Grid Penalty Application and Upcoming F1 Race Timeline

The Lando Norris Franco Colapinto clash continues to shape talk ahead of the next race. Colapinto’s five-place grid penalty applies at that next Formula 1 start, not in Baku, since he had already retired there. Alpine will begin that weekend from a compromised position on the grid.

Norris and McLaren, meanwhile, will look to move past a weekend that yielded no points and fresh Turn 1 damage to repair. For the full sequence of events in Baku, including how the safety car restart unfolded, see our initial Baku crash coverage.
