Somkiat Chantra will return to MotoGP as a factory Honda stand-in for the injured Joan Mir at the Japanese Grand Prix. It’s a sudden recall. The Somkiat Chantra Joan Mir Honda switch was confirmed this week. Mir is set to miss both the Japanese and Indonesian rounds in early October.
Somkiat Chantra replaces injured Joan Mir for Japanese Grand Prix
Chantra steps back into a factory Honda seat less than a year after leaving the grid as a full-time rider. He takes Mir’s place for the Japanese Grand Prix weekend. That gives Honda continuity in its factory garage while its number one rider recovers.
The call-up is short-term. It is not a return to a race seat for the rest of the season. Honda has not confirmed any fixtures for Chantra beyond Japan at this stage.
Honda confirms Mir absence across Japanese and Indonesian rounds
Mir will sit out the Japanese Grand Prix and the following Indonesian round. That rules him out of two consecutive weekends in early October. Honda has not detailed the nature or expected recovery time for the injury behind the absence.
Chantra is currently confirmed to deputise for Mir in Japan only. He is not lined up for Indonesia. That round falls on the same weekend as a World Superbike fixture at Estoril, where Chantra already has commitments. Honda will need a separate solution if Mir remains unavailable for the Indonesian Grand Prix.
Chantra background and Honda’s Grand Prix tactical setup
Chantra spent six seasons in Moto2 between 2019 and 2024. He took two wins and six podiums from 106 races. That record earned him a step up to MotoGP for 2025 with LCR Honda, where he replaced Takaaki Nakagami on the grid.
His rookie season brought 7 points from 17 starts and a 26th place finish in the championship, with a best result of 13th in Indonesia. It was a modest return by MotoGP standards. Still, it was enough to keep him inside Honda’s wider rider pool heading into 2026.
Chantra moved across to World Superbike for 2026. A pre-season injury at Sepang then required surgery, the same setback that has now opened the door for this short recall to MotoGP. Nakagami, the man Chantra replaced at LCR in 2025, has already deputised for Mir once this year at the Austrian Grand Prix. He returns to Japan too, running as a wildcard for the Honda Test Team rather than as Mir’s substitute. Between them, Chantra and Nakagami give Honda two riders with direct knowledge of its factory package to call on when a seat opens up, a pattern of squad reshuffling that echoes recent MotoGP rider movements elsewhere on the grid.
Upcoming Grand Prix timeline and World Superbike schedule clash
The Japanese Grand Prix in early October is the immediate focus. Chantra is expected to line up alongside Nakagami’s wildcard entry in Honda colours. Beyond that weekend, Mir’s participation in the Indonesian round remains unresolved.
Chantra’s own calendar points back to World Superbike duty at Estoril on the same weekend as the Indonesian Grand Prix. That clash is why Honda has stopped short of naming him for that round. Any further changes to the Honda GP lineup would need to work around it, alongside the wider run of motorcycle racing updates shaping the back end of the season.
