# Santino Ferrucci Left Chasing An IndyCar Seat For 2027

**Santino Ferrucci** has been left without a full-time IndyCar drive for 2027 after AJ Foyt Racing confirmed Dennis Hauger as the new occupant of its No. 14 Chevrolet — the car Ferrucci had raced since 2023.

Foyt announced the Norwegian’s multi-year agreement on Wednesday, beginning with the 2027 season. Ferrucci was not mentioned at any point in the team’s press release, and RACER reports that the 28-year-old is now pursuing a part-time programme with the same squad rather than leaving the series he has raced in since his 2018 debut.

## Hauger’s rise made him the obvious target

Hauger arrives as the reigning IndyCar Rookie of the Year, a title he took in a season spent with Dale Coyne Racing after [winning Indy NXT at the first attempt in 2025](https://readmotorsport.com/2026/09/07/dennis-hauger/) with six victories. Before crossing the Atlantic he won the 2019 Italian Formula 4 title and the 2021 FIA Formula 3 championship, took five Formula 2 wins and spent a long stint on the Red Bull Junior Team.

“Dennis has accomplished a lot for someone who is only 23,” team president Larry Foyt said. “Every time he’s moved into something new, he’s adapted quickly and he’s won. Coming over here and winning in Indy NXT as a rookie certainly got everyone’s attention, and then we watched how he progressed through his rookie season in IndyCar.”

Hauger will drive the No. 14 Homes For Our Troops Chevrolet. “I’ve learned a lot in my first two years racing in America, but I still feel like there is a lot more for me to learn and accomplish in IndyCar,” he said. “This team has so much history in this sport, but what intrigues me even more was hearing about the future and what they’re building now.”

## Where Santino Ferrucci goes from here

The move is a blunt piece of arithmetic rather than a verdict on Ferrucci. Foyt has two cars, and Larry Foyt has been explicit that the signing is part of a longer-term investment programme — “we’re investing in our people, our technical side and our commercial program because we want to continue moving forward,” he said, crediting backers Hendricks Holding Company and Homes For Our Troops with funding the expansion.

Ferrucci’s four seasons in the No. 14 covered the full arc of that rebuild, and he remains one of the more marketable American drivers on the grid. A part-time arrangement with Foyt would at least keep him in the paddock and, crucially, in the conversation for the Indianapolis 500 — the event around which most of the series’ part-time entries are built.

## Foyt’s second seat is its own headache

Complicating matters, the team’s other 2027 plans are not settled either. RACER reported on Tuesday that Foyt had been set to sign Josh Pierson for the next two seasons, only for IndyCar’s new licensing criteria to cast doubt over whether the young American would be approved at all.

That leaves a team that has spent two years adding structure heading into the winter with one car locked down, one in limbo and an incumbent driver looking for a way back in. It is a familiar shape for a silly season that has already produced [Scott Dixon’s move to Arrow McLaren](https://readmotorsport.com/2026/07/16/scott-dixon-arrow-mclaren-2027/) after 25 years at Chip Ganassi Racing, and which shows little sign of settling now that [Alex Palou’s record fifth title](https://readmotorsport.com/2026/09/10/indycar-2026-season-review-palou-fifth-title/) has closed the 2026 book.

Foyt says Hauger’s public debut with the team is still to come. Whether Ferrucci is standing alongside him in some capacity when it does is the question the off-season now has to answer.
