Lando Norris claims pole position for inaugural Madring Spanish Grand Prix

Lando Norris claimed pole position for the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madring after edging Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds.

The McLaren driver secured top spot ahead of the Mercedes championship leader with a sensational final qualifying lap. Max Verstappen will start third for Red Bull, while Lewis Hamilton lines up fourth for Ferrari.

Despite starting at the front of the grid, the reigning world champion faces a severe strategic disadvantage. A Friday gearbox failure restricted his practice running, leaving him without any meaningful high-fuel telemetry for the 57-lap race.

Navigating The Steep Degradation Cliff

With track temperatures expected to reach 53C on Sunday, engineers are already caught in a tricky setup trap. The demanding street-style layout features successive high-speed corners and the heavily banked La Monumental, driving extreme tyre wear.

“Everyone found out there was a lot of graining on the tyres,” McLaren team principal Andrea Stella told Sky Sports.

Without his own race simulations, Norris must rely on data from team-mate Oscar Piastri to manage his pace. However, the narrow circuit naturally raises overtaking fears for drivers trying to balance speed against tyre preservation.

“We saw in the long run how steep the degradation can be, especially if you push too early. We will try to see in the moment,” Antonelli told Sky Sports.

Mercedes team-mate George Russell qualified sixth and echoed those concerns ahead of the race.

“I think tyre degradation will define it one way or another,” he told Sky Sports.

The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix gets under way at 3:00pm local time on Sunday.
