Robert Shwartzman will return to the World Endurance Championship Hypercar class in 2027 after securing a factory seat with Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.
The 26-year-old moves back to sportscar competition following Prema Racing’s withdrawal from the IndyCar Series. Shwartzman secured a remarkable pole position for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 during his American stint.
He holds proven top-tier credentials, having claimed a dramatic Lone Star Le Mans victory at Austin in 2024. That success in the AF Corse Ferrari 499P showcased his endurance capability as Ferrari seized a historic win.
The French manufacturer is overhauling its 9X8 programme to challenge for outright victories, hoping to capitalise after a recent mechanical failure blew the championship wide open.
Testing The Upgraded Peugeot 9X8
Shwartzman will sample the heavily revised 2027-specification machinery at the Algarve circuit in mid-September. He joins a broader squad restructuring overseen by Peugeot Sport team principal Emmanuel Esnault.
Speaking to motorsport.com, Esnault noted that Shwartzman possesses the necessary character to anchor the squad. “He is quite impressive not only in terms of speed, but also mindset, approach and positivity, so we are very happy. We want to build something strong on the human side and the sporting side with him,” Esnault said.
Development driver Doriane Pin will also test a 2026-spec 9X8 at Paul Ricard in December as Esnault evaluates the broader team structure.
Peugeot will continue their development programme at Portimao before finalising their full driver roster ahead of the 2027 campaign.
