Unimore Racing claimed pole position for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League’s first European event at Imola.
Five AI-driven Super Formula EAV-25 cars are navigating the legendary Italian circuit. The autonomous systems face severe elevation changes and unforgiving gravel traps.
During testing, algorithmic decision-making matched human pace, lapping within eight and a half tenths of Super Formula driver Juju Noda. Software interventions, including live counter-steer recoveries, kept the cars out of the barriers.
Weather Brings Technical Hurdles
Sudden thunderstorms during testing forced teams to deploy new waterproofing equipment. Specifically designed rubber camera sleeves and cockpit cover seals allowed the cars to continue running through heavy rain and hail.
A2RL technical director Nicola Palarchi confirmed the success of the new developments.
“We had some rain already in 2024 when we were preparing for the exhibition in Suzuka at the time of the Super Formula event,” Palarchi said.
“So we managed to roll out the rain kit that was very successful, and the teams could enjoy wet track condition, which was a first also for all of them.”
Such technical adaptability is vital when unpredictable conditions and a sudden Monza grid shake-up redefine Sunday strategies across motorsport. These automated responses demand extreme precision, echoing the instinct required for a famous Laguna Seca overtake.
TUM Autonomous Motorsport, the reigning A2RL champions, qualified third after suffering a technical issue. Polimove secured second on the grid. The five-car demonstration race begins at 18:30 local time on Saturday.
