MotoGP title contender Ai Ogura will miss this weekend’s Aragon Grand Prix after crashing while training in Japan, with the Ai Ogura injury confirmed by Trackhouse on Wednesday as a fracture close to his left thumb. The Japanese rider needs surgery on Thursday, and Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori will take over his RS-GP at MotorLand Aragon on Sunday 30 August.
What the Ai Ogura injury costs him in the title fight
The timing could hardly be worse. Ogura, third in the world championship, is 37 points behind leader Jorge Martin and six adrift of the Spaniard’s factory Aprilia team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, and he arrives at a lost weekend having already thrown away points with a crash at Silverstone — his first significant race error of a season that began with victory at Assen.
With Marc Marquez, Fabio di Giannantonio and Trackhouse team-mate Raul Fernandez all within 19 points of him, Crash.net notes that Ogura could leave Aragon as low as sixth. It is also the second year in succession that Aragon has been struck off his calendar; a leg injury ruled him out of the 2025 race.
“SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team rider #79 Ai Ogura suffered a left-hand injury while training in Japan,” the team’s statement read. “On arrival in Europe, the fracture close to his left thumb has been found to require surgery. The Team welcomes #32 Lorenzo Savadori who will substitute for this round, in Aragon.”
Savadori lines up alongside Silverstone winner Fernandez for a team whose 2027 line-up is already reshaped, and on a weekend when the fitness of the title chasers was supposed to be someone else’s problem. Motorsport.com reports that Ogura had moved back to Japan to train and be near family. No return date has been given.
