Yuki Tsunoda IndyCar Switch In Play As Meyer Shank Talks Emerge

A Yuki Tsunoda IndyCar move is on the table for 2027. Motorsport.com understands the Japanese driver, who has spent this season on the sidelines as Red Bull’s test and reserve driver, is in talks with Meyer Shank Racing over its #66 Honda entry for next year’s IndyCar Series campaign.

Why the Meyer Shank seat is coming free

According to the report, the #66 is set to be vacated because Marcus Armstrong is moving across to Meyer Shank’s #60 car when defending Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist departs at the end of the current campaign. Armstrong has been one of the stories of the IndyCar season, not least when an engine failure denied him a maiden win at Road America in June.

Tsunoda, 26, has 111 grand prix starts to his name since his Formula 1 debut in 2021, with a career-best fourth place at that season’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With race seats on the F1 grid tightly contested, a switch would follow the trail blazed by compatriot Takuma Sato, who turned an F1 career into two Indianapolis 500 victories.

He is not a complete stranger to the machinery. As Motorsport.com reports, Tsunoda drove a Chip Ganassi Racing-prepared Indy car at a Honda promotional event outside Las Vegas in late 2024, logging around 30 minutes of running under the eye of six-time champion Scott Dixon.

“If I have an opportunity and I feel it’s the right time, for sure I would love to,” Tsunoda said at the time. “I like the US itself, so I don’t mind living here as well.”

Nothing is signed, and Tsunoda hedged in 2024 that the moment had not yet arrived. Eighteen months on, with no 2027 F1 seat obviously waiting for him, the calculation looks rather different.
