Max Verstappen recently shared his reaction to Gianpiero “GP” Lambiase from Red Bull Racing in 2028. He revealed that GP already told him about the offer, and when he asked for his approval, he encouraged him to take it.

The duo has shared one of the most memorable partnerships in F1, known for their honest and lively radio banter, mutual trust, strong-mindset dynamic, and their consistent drive to achieve perfect results. Together, they have contributed immensely to Red Bull’s success. Beyond the track, Verstappen also views GP as a brother and mentor, who has been a key part of his journey in F1.

Verstappen speaks up about GP’s exit

In an interview with Viaplay, the Dutchman revealed that GP had consulted him before taking the offer from McLaren. He said, “He told me what kind of offer he’d received. I said: ‘You’d be daft not to take it.’ We’ve already achieved everything together, and then he gets such a fantastic offer, especially with his family in mind and the security it would bring him.”

When GP asked for his approval, Verstappen didn’t hesitate and immediately told him to accept it, believing the offer was in his best interest. He revealed that GP really wanted to hear what he thought about the switch from Red Bull to McLaren.

Earlier, Verstappen’s father, Jos, echoed similar sentiments, that they were all aware of GP’s departure and are supportive of his move. Moreover, he added that they will try to make the most of GP’s time at the team to drive strong results. Greenlighting his move to McLaren, Jos said, “It’s a huge opportunity for him, and we understand that. We’ve also told him: you have to go for it and grab it with both hands.” He has also left the decision up to the team to find GP’s best replacement.

McLaren hires Gianpiero Lambiase as chief racing engineer

Earlier this month, McLaren announced that they have recruited Lambiase for 2028 and shared what responsibilities he would be undertaking in his new role. They revealed that he would be reporting directly to team principal, Andrea Stella.

“The role of the Chief Racing Officer already exists within the team’s structure with overall leadership of the race team. These duties are currently managed by Andrea Stella in addition to his role as Team Principal. Lambiase is the latest hire designed to strengthen and support the talent pool that exists at McLaren Mastercard, while also reaffirming the team’s long-term commitment to confirming its position as a Championship-winning team,” the statement read.
