Capito steps down as Williams F1 boss

Williams has announced its Formula 1 team principal and CEO Jost Capito has stepped down from his role, with technical director FX Demaison also leaving the team.

Capito joined Williams as its new CEO at the end of 2020 before being appointed as team principal midway through his first season last year.

Under Capito’s leadership, Williams finished eighth in the 2021 constructors’ championship – the Grove-based outfit’s highest finish for four seasons.

But in the first year of F1’s technical regulations in 2022, Williams slipped adrift of its rivals as the FW44 failed to hit the ground running and finished bottom of the standings with just eight points.

Despite the team’s struggles, Capito was expected to stay on next year, but on Monday, Williams revealed he would leave his post along with technical director Demaison.

“It has been a huge privilege to lead Williams Racing for the last two seasons and to lay the foundations for the turnaround of this great team,” Capito said.

“I look forward to watching the team as it continues on its path to future success.”

One of Capito’s final acts as team boss was to hire Williams protege Logan Sargeant to race alongside Alexander Albon in 2023, making him the first full-time American F1 driver for 16 years.

“We would like to thank Jost for his hard work and dedication as we embarked on a major transformation process to begin the journey of reviving Williams Racing,” said chairman of Dorilton Capital Matthew Savage.

“We’re grateful that Jost postponed his planned retirement to take on this challenge and now he will pass the reins on for the next part of this staged process. We would also like to thank FX for his contribution and wish him all the best for his future as he moves on.”

Williams revealed it plans to confirm Capito’s successor and a new techincal director in “due course”.
