# Vettel will ‘miss the adrenaline’ of F1 after US GP recovery drive

Sebastian Vettel admits he will “miss the adrenaline” of his recovery drive during his final stint in the United States Grand Prix when he retires from Formula 1.

Aston Martin’s recent upturn in form continued in Austin as Vettel and team-mate Lance Stroll both ran inside the top 10 in the first phase of the race.

But the team’s race began to unravel when Stroll retired on the spot after a collision with Fernando Alonso, earning him a three-place grid penalty for Mexico, and a slow second pitstop dropped Vettel out of the points.

The four-time world champion mounted a fightback, pulling off a pair of stunning overtakes on Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen – the latter on the final lap – along the way, to recover to eighth place.

While Vettel conceded he would “miss these moments” of his adrenaline rushed recovery at COTA, he stressed it hadn’t made him have second thoughts about calling time on his F1 career.

“Obviously, I will miss these moments. That’s not a secret,” Vettel said, as quoted by Motorsport.com.

“But I did think long and hard making the decision and I also thought about these moments that I will miss the adrenaline and so on. Obviously, parts of me will miss those a lot; other parts are looking forward to what’s coming.”

Vettel said Aston Martin’s pace over the Austin weekend came as a surprise despite its on-track gains in recent races, with the Silverstone-based outfit quicker than its midfield rivals.

The ARM22’s lack of straightline speed meant Vettel had to be more inventive when on the offensive, but the German admitted he had “some fun” during his charge through the pack in the closing stages.

“It was a total surprise to be faster than McLaren and Alpine,” he admitted. “I mean, we’ve looked after the tyres well, but I don’t think that’s the main factor.

“Obviously, without the slow pitstop we would have scored double the points. In return at least I had a fun race at the end, and we could recover some points.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have the pace down the straights to just pass comfortably, so I had to try something unusual, either on the brakes or in unusual spots. And I did and it worked most of the time.

“I definitely had some fun and I had tight battles, especially with Kevin at the end. It’s a bit of a climax and he’s one of the most difficult ones to overtake in the entire field. But he left just enough room and it was good fun for both of us.”
