Logan Sargeant will be in the second Williams seat in Formula 1 next season providing he secures an FIA superlicence, team boss Jost Capito has confirmed.
Sargeant made his F1 race weekend debut in first practice for this weekend’s United States Grand Prix on Friday, finishing the session in 18th for Williams.
The American driver, who is part of the Williams young driver academy, is currently third in the F2 drivers’ standings going into the final two races of the season in Abu Dhabi next month.
Sargeant’s practice outing in Austin handed him an additional point towards his superlicence, and Williams announced he would be back in the car for further FP1 runs in Mexico and Abu Dhabi.
Drivers must acquire 40 points in order to gain an FIA superlicence and should he have clean sessions in his two upcoming practice outings, Sargeant would be up to 30, meaning he would need a sixth place finish in F2.
Speaking on Saturday in Austin, Capito revealed Sargeant would drive for Williams alongside Alex Albon in 2023 if he gains a superlicence.
“We feel he’s ready to race,” said Capito, as quoted by Motorsport.com.
“Under the condition that he has enough superlicence points, he will be our second driver next year.”
Should be on the F1 grid next year, Sargeant would be America’s first representative driver since Alexander Rossi in 2015 and first full-time racer for 16 years.
While Sergeant lies P3 in the F2 championship ahead of the season finale, he is only 12 points clear of Liam Lawson who is in seventh place, which would not be enough to give him the required superlicence points.
