# New all-female series run by F1 mooted for 2023

Formula 1 is reported to be planning to introduce its own all-female single-seater championship from next year in the wake of this season’s W Series cancelation.

W Series was created back in 2019 as a way to help female racers gain more opportunities to make their way up the racing ladder without the worry of a lack of funding.

Despite its 2020 season called off due to the global pandemic, W Series returned in 2021 and joined F1’s support programme for several races.

While it was due to support F1 at eight grand prix’s this year, financial troubles have forced W Series to cancel the final two rounds, leaving the organisation in doubt beyond 2022.

This meant the championship only ran for six of the planned eight events, with Jamie Chadwick crowned champion for a third successive season.

Amid uncertainty over the future of W Series, reports emerged during the United States Grand Prix weekend that F1 is considering launching its own series for female drivers.

The plan is to allow for younger drivers to compete of around 16 or older and make the championship lead directly to the next band of feeder series, with graduation to F3 and subsequently F2.

F1 has not formally confirmed any details but it is expected that F4 cars will be used and fielded by teams already involved in the existing championship.

It is understood that if W Series survives and returns in 2023, it can run alongside the new initiative and not as a direct rival.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been a leading voice in encouraging for wider representation in motorsport, and recently suggested F1 could have helped save the W Series.

“With the organisation, with F1 and Liberty doing so well, it was not a lot for them to be able to help out in that space,” he said, as quoted by Motorsport.com.
