# Mercedes’ final 2022 upgrade about learning for 2023 F1 car

Mercedes says its final upgrade package for this year will predominately focus on learning as much as possible for its 2023 Formula 1 car.

The German manufacturer will bring aero updates and weight-saving components to next week’s United States Grand Prix, as it aims to end its worst season in the V6 hybrid era on a high.

Three is hope that the new developments can have a positive impact on on-track performance, but director of trackside engineering Andrew Shovlin insists the team also has an eye on improvements for next year.

“It’s our final step of aero development and that will hopefully give us a bit more performance,” Shovlin said in Mercedes’ post-Suzuka debrief video.

“But importantly with every step, we are learning more and more and that learning we can carry into next year.

“Also, we have taken some weight out of components that will hopefully get the car closer to the weight limit.”

While Mercedes’ form has vastly improved from the beginning of the season, the W13 still has inconsistencies that Shovlin admits makes it difficult to predict if the updates can put it in contention to fight Red Bull and Ferrari in the final four races.

Mercedes comes off the back of tricky weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix where it was far off the pace, but at the previous round in Singapore it was less than half a tenth off pole position.

“It’s very difficult for us to predict where we are going to be,” Shovlin concedes. “In Singapore Lewis was awfully close to pole position, yet in Suzuka both cars had a big gap to the front,” said Shovlin.

“Now, our race pace has been reasonably strong. If we can make a step, hopefully we can get into the fight with the Ferraris and the Red Bulls, but qualifying for us is the really difficult one to predict at the moment.

“But as I said a lot of it is about learning and we are certainly going to give it our best shot in the final four races.”
