# Verstappen: ‘Very hard’ to match 2022 dominance in future F1 seasons

Max Verstappen says winning his second Formula 1 world championship feels “even more beautiful” than his maiden crown last year, calling it a “pretty special year”.

Verstappen’s victory at the Japanese Grand Prix saw him seal back-to-back F1 titles, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc post-race five-second time penalty giving him the required points advantage.

In contrast to his 2021 title, Verstappen has wrapped up the drivers’ championship with four races remaining after a winner-takes-all season finale versus Lewis Hamilton in Abu Dhabi last year.

When asked to compare both of his titles, Verstappen said there were “very different emotions” from last season to this year.

“I think the first one is always a little bit more emotional,” Verstappen said, as quoted by Motorsport.com. “But the second one is probably even more beautiful.”

Verstappen acknowledged how his run to the 2022 crown has come amid Red Bull’s dominance this year, with the Dutchman winning 12 races, just one shy of the record for most in a season and nine more than the rest of the grid.

“The season we’ve had with the wins and just the great races and the teamwork, the 1-2s we have had and of course, we’re leading the constructors, so we really want to focus on that as well, to try and secure that,” he said.

“So it’s been a pretty special year. It’s something you really have to remind yourself of, because these kinds of years, you don’t have very often.”

Verstappen’s second drivers’ title came despite F1’s biggest regulation overhaul for over a decade, which saw cars become much more raceable than their predecessors.

Despite starting races such as Hungary and Spa from outside the top 10 due to poor qualifying and engine penalties Verstappen still went on to win, and he believes it will be difficult for him to match the heights of this this year in future F1 seasons.

“Last year it was all really qualifying dependent, and that’s how you would normally win a race,” said Verstappen.

“Now, even with some engine penalties, it was coming back to the front. It’s really been an enjoyable year, and of course, a very special year, which will be very hard, I think, in the future to match from myself.

“That’s why I think we really have to appreciate it and really enjoy it. We were enjoying it already. Probably now we can just enjoy it a little bit more.”
