# Australian GP confirms April date for 2023 race

Organisers of Formula 1’s Australian Grand Prix have revealed the date for the running of the 2023 race at the Albert Park Circuit.

In an announcement from the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, it was confirmed next year’s event will take place between March 30 and April 2.

While F1 is yet to publish the full extent of the 2023 calendar, Melbourne is set to host the third round of the season for a second successive year.

The race made a welcome return in April earlier this year after the previous two versions were cancelled due to Covid-19.

Melbourne’s organisers recently signed a contract extension that will keep the race on the calendar through to 2035.

Despite traditionally opening the F1 season since hosting its first grand prix in 1996, the new agreement will see Albert Park hold just five season-openers in that period.

The event is also set to welcome Formula 2 and Formula 3 for the first time in 2023 as part of a revised support bill.

There is greater significance for next year’s Australian Grand Prix with the prospect of two Australian drivers being on the grid for the first time since 2013.

Oscar Piastri is widely expected to make his F1 debut in 2023, although it remains unclear whether he will race for current backers Alpine or sign for McLaren.

In the likelihood Piastri does make the switch to McLaren, he would take compatriot Daniel Ricciardo’s seat, leaving the eight-time grand prix winner without a drive.

Ricciardo has been linked with a return to Alpine, who he drove for under its previous guise Renault in 2019 and 2020, if he is forced to make way for Piastri.
