Ricciardo addresses McLaren and F1 future: ‘I’m not walking away’

Daniel Ricciardo has moved to address speculation regarding his future at McLaren and in Formula 1, insisting he is “not walking away”.

Off the back of two seasons at Renault, Ricciardo made the switch to McLaren in 2021 but has struggled to make a breakthrough since joining the team.

Ricciardo’s standout performance at McLaren so far was his victory in last year’s Italian Grand Prix, but apart from that he has failed to shine on a regular basis and match the pace of team-mate Lando Norris.

Despite the change in regulations this season, Ricciardo’s struggles continue to thwart his McLaren career and has fuelled speculation about whether he will remain at the Woking-based outfit in 2023.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown recently retracted initial comments that suggested Ricciardo was at risk of losing his seat unless his performances improved, reiterating his faith in the Australian driver.

But taking to social media on Wednesday, Ricciardo quashed rumours that he won’t see out his three-year contract with McLaren that runs out next year.

“There have been a lot of rumours around my future in Formula 1, but I want you to hear it from me,” Wrote Ricciardo.

“I am committed to McLaren until the end of next year and am not walking away from the sport,

“Appreciate it hasn’t always been easy, but who wants it easy!

“I’m working my ass off with the team to make improvements and get the car right and back to the front where it belongs. I still want this more than ever.”

Ricciardo’s statement comes after three driver candidates were named as his potential successors should the eight-time grand prix winner choose to leave McLaren before his three-year deal runs out.

Reigning Formula 2 champion and Alpine reserve driver Oscar Piastri looked set to sign for Williams to replace Nicholas Latifi, but it is understood his management team has put the deal on hold amid Ricciardo’s situation.

Williams driver Alex Albon is also a contender after an impressive campaign for Williams, while four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel could be another option with his future at Aston Martin still unclear.
