# Haas without spare chassis in Melbourne after Schumacher crash

The Haas Formula 1 team will be without a spare chassis for this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix following Mick Schumacher’s qualifying crash in Saudi Arabia.

Schumacher suffered a 33g impact when he lost control while on a flying lap in Q2, with the incident ruling him out of the race despite suffering no injuries.

Part of Haas’ decision to sit Schumacher out of the grand prix in Jeddah was to ensure it didn’t compromise preparations for Melbourne – particularly in the current cost cap era.

Although Schumacher’s chassis is repairable and can be re-used, the team has sent it back to its chassis partner Dallara’s base in Italy for further observation.

“We have sent it back at the beginning of the week to Europe, so we get ready for Imola \[the next race in a fortnight\], because we had to bring it here because of customs formalities,” explained Haas team principal Gunther Steiner, as quoted by The Race.

“It had to enter here and then it could be shipped back to Europe from here and it’s on its way back now.”

Haas estimated the repair job to fix Schumacher’s car was around half a million to one million dollars, but Steiner insists the team’s situation concerning spare parts isn’t as bad as expected.

“The iteration of spare parts is as expected, on race number two after a big crash,” Steiner said.

“So they have got everything, but we have no abundance of it.”

Steiner stressed Schumacher and team-mate Kevin Magnussen are aware of the dilemma, but won’t be ordered to approach this weekend more cautiously than normal.

“I think you cannot approach it differently,” said Steiner.

“The drivers are aware of the situation, that there is no spare chassis, but that can happen sometimes that there’s no spare chassis.

“I’m not panicking and if something happens, we will deal with it as it comes along.

“You cannot go and say go out there and drive slowly, that doesn’t make sense.

“Just don’t take extra risks if you don’t have to.”
