# Schumacher to sit out Saudi Arabian GP after heavy qualifying crash

Mick Schumacher will sit out of Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix following his heavy crash in qualifying, the Haas Formula 1 team has confirmed.

Schumacher suffered a high-speed crash at Turn 10 while on a flying lap in Q2, losing control of his car over the exit curb before slamming into the concrete wall.

The side-on impact left Schumacher’s car with heavy crash damage, but a check over at the Jeddah Circuit’s medical centre revealed he had suffered no physical injuries.

As a precaution, Schumacher was flown by helicopter to the King Fahad Armed Forces hospital near the track to undergo a CT scan and other regular health checks.

Haas team principal Gunther Steiner said the team had made the decision to withdraw Schumacher from competing in Sunday’s race, and revealed the German may remain in hospital overnight for further observation.

“The best thing is that Mick has apparently no injuries, he’s in the hospital right now and being evaluated by the doctors, so he is in good hands at the moment,” Steiner said.

“There is a possibility that he’ll have to stay for observation overnight at the hospital. Based on these facts and where we are, we have decided not to field his car tomorrow.”

Schumacher’s stunt brought out the red flags and resulted in almost an hours delay before qualifying resumed.

Steiner went on to reveal Haas had been unable to directly communicate with Schumacher following the incident due to the extent of the damage caused by the crash.

“We didn’t have any contact with radio with him because everything with the impact, it’s all digital, it broke up,” Steiner told Sky Sports F1.

“So we didn’t know anything. But then we got the message that he’s conscious, that was the most important thing. And then as soon as they had him down, they said he had no exterior injuries.”
