Williams Formula 1 boss Jost Capito will be absent from this weekend’s Saudi Arabia Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19.
Capito was unveiled as Williams’ new CEO at the start of the year before also taking on the role of team principal following Simon Roberts’ departure.
In a statement issued by Williams on Thursday, the team confirmed Capito would not travel to Jeddah due to his positive test.
“Williams Racing can confirm that CEO and team principal Jost Capito has tested positive for COVID-19 prior to travelling to Jeddah for this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix,” the statement reads.
“Jost is now following UK national health authority guidelines. There has been no wider impact on Williams Racing personnel and the team will continue to operate trackside as planned.”
Under Capito’s leadership, Williams is enjoying its best season since 2017, sitting eighth in the constructors’ standings ahead of Alfa Romeo and Haas.
Saudi Arabia will mark the first race for Williams since the death of founder and former team boss Sir Frank Williams last weekend.
It is understood Williams will carry a tribute on its cars to honour its late founder, with F1 also planning to pay homage to Williams over the coming days.
