Robert Kubica will make his first Formula 1 start in nearly two years at this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix after Kimi Raikkonen tested positive for COVID-19.
The FIA confirmed on Saturday morning that Raikkonen has delivered a positive test, ultimately ruling him out of competing for the rest of the weekend.
A statement read: “The FIA, Formula 1 and Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN can today confirm that during onsite PCR testing for the 2021 FIA Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, Kimi Räikkönen has tested positive for COVID-19.
“In accordance with COVID-19 protocols he will take no further part in this Event. All contacts have been declared.”
Alfa Romeo issued its own statement on the matter, revealing Raikkonen was “displaying no symptoms and is in good spirits”.
“He has immediately entered isolation in his hotel,” the team added. “The team has carried out an investigation for any close contacts and there is no further impact expected for the team for the remainder of this event.”
Raikkonen’s absence means Alfa Romeo reserve driver Kubica will step in as his replacement, making his first F1 appearance since Abu Dhabi 2019.
Kubica previously raced in F1 from 2006-2010, claiming one victory at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, before his career was halted by due to injuries sustained in a rallying accident in 2011.
The Pole made a sensational return to the series in 2019 with Williams, with the best result of 10th at the German Grand Prix that proved to be the team’s only points of that season.
Alongside his role at Alfa Romeo, Kubica has been racing in European Le Mans this year, and has racked up milage in the C41 during some test days.
Kubica will only get one-hour of practice to get dialled in to the Zandvoort circuit before Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session.
