# Albon: F1 return my ‘main goal’ for 2022

Alexander Albon says returning to Formula 1 is his “main goal” for 2022, but revealed he is eyeing a move to Indycar should he fail to find a seat.

Albon was left without an F1 drive for this year after being dropped by Red Bull, but has remained involved with the team as its reserve driver.

Alongside his duties for Red Bull, Albon has being racing in DTM series where he currently sits fifth in the standings with two podiums.

Red Bull looks likely to retain Sergio Perez for a second season, with the Mexican proving a safe pair of hands alongside Max Verstappen, while sister outfit AlphaTauri announced its intentions to maintain its driver line-up of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda.

Albon is understood to be in talks with Williams and Alfa Romeo over a seat for next year, but the Thai driver is open to a switch to Indycar as a backup plan.

“My main goal is to be in F1, but there’s never a 100 per cent certainty on that, so you got to have plan B and C to see what else is out there,” Albon said, as quoted by Crash.net.

“I’ve always had that interest within IndyCar. You see it on the rise now, especially with the viewership and everything going up.

“Honestly, it’s more just hard to say if it’s something I would want to be doing. I’m seeing a few teams out there right now. I want to chat with them and see what’s out there so I can decide what I am going to do.

“Let’s just say, obviously, if the right opportunity is there, or let’s say the lack of opportunity is there in F1, and there’s an opportunity here that’s a good opportunity with a good team, and if in these next few days I think it’s something I would enjoy, obviously then the odds \[of racing IndyCar in 2022\] go up.”

Albon attended the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the latest Indycar round last weekend, and was spotted chatting to ex-F1 driver Romain Grosjean – who joined the championship after leaving F1 at the end of 2020.

With the Frenchman thriving after his transition to the American series, Albon said he wanted to see how Grosjean was fairing as he considers his racing options.

“Seeing Romain, as well, seeing what he’s doing, it’s been really interesting to see,” Albon added.

“I just wanted to see what he thinks about it. Is he happy? Of course, he’s happy. He’s always got a smile on his face. How was that transition for him, and how did he feel in IndyCar straight away? He looks very comfortable here.”
