# AlphaTauri doesn’t see ‘any reason’ to change driver line-up for 2022

AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost says he doesn’t see “any reason” why the team shouldn’t retain either Pierre Gasly or Yuki Tsunoda for 2022.

The Faenza-based outfit bodes one the youngest driver line-ups on the grid, with the pair having a combined age of just 46.

Gasly, who rejoined AlphaTauri midway through the 2019 season after being demoted by Red Bull, has reinvigorated himself since the move, claiming a maiden career Formula 1 victory at last year’s Italian Grand Prix.

Tsunoda fast-tracked his way through the junior categories under the backing of Red Bull and Honda, showing glimpses of his speed and talent during his rookie campaign.

But the Japanese driver has struggled to perform consistently, with team-mate Gasly out-qualifying him at every race so far this season.

When asked if he wanted an unchanged line-up next year, Tost said, as quoted by Motorsport.com: “Yeah, I hope so, because I don’t see any other driver there.

“I hope we will also next year be with Pierre and with Yuki because for Yuki, then it will be the second season and he knows now the tracks.

“Because you must not forget, we will go in the second half of the season where Yuki doesn’t even know the race tracks.

“In Europe, he raced in Formula 2 and Formula 3 and so on. But we are coming to America, he has never raced there. We are coming to Mexico, where he didn’t race. We will come to Sao Paulo where he didn’t race.”

After a double-points finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, AlphaTauri sits sixth in the constructors’ championship, nine points behind fifth-placed Alpine.

Although there has been a consensus the team has generally underperformed following its pre-season promise, Tost had nothing but praise for both of his drivers.

“Pierre is doing a fantastic job, and Yuki, once more, is a newcomer and he is doing a good job,” Tost added. “He has to get experience and he has to learn a lot but that is nothing special.

“That’s logical with young drivers. That’s the risk you take when a rookie comes on board.

“Both drivers I think are confident enough. I don’t see any reason to change anything during the summer break on our driver line-up. I also don’t see any alternatives.”
