# Ferrari inspection reveals ‘no serious damage’ to Leclerc gearbox

Ferrari will make a decision over whether to change Charles Leclerc’s gearbox on Sunday morning after initial inspections found it sustained “no serious damage” from his Monaco qualifying crash.

Leclerc became the first Monegasque in Formula 1 to seal pole position at his home event after topping a thrilling qualifying session.

Having already secured provisional pole, Leclerc’s session ended with a crash at the exit of the Swimming Pool chicane, which inadvertently brought out the red flags to prevent rivals from eclipsing his laptime.

Despite claiming pole on his home circuit, Leclerc admitted he feared the incident could have caused damage to the gearbox on his Ferrari and result in a potential grid penalty.

In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Ferrari revealed it had completed initial checks on Leclerc’s car which showed no major damage but will choose whether to replace it or not ahead of the race.

“An initial inspection of the gearbox in Charles Leclerc’s car has not revealed any serious damage,” the statement read, as quoted by Motorsport.com.

“Further checks will be carried out tomorrow, to decide if the same gearbox can be used in the race.”

In the event Ferrari does decide to change Leclerc’s gearbox, he would drop five places to start sixth on the grid, handing pole to Verstappen.
