Formula 1 has unveiled the layout for the first-ever Saudi Arabia Grand Prix later this year, which is set to be the fastest street circuit on the calendar.
Jeddah will host Saudi Arabia’s inaugural F1 race on December 5 after striking a long-term deal at the end of last year.
With 27 turns and a length of 6.175km, the track will become the second longest on F1’s 23-race schedule in 2021, only shorter than Spa-Francorchamps.
Simulations predict the long straights and high-speed corners will deliver an average lap speed of around 250km/h, and could feature as many as three DRS zones.
The circuit, which has been designed with Tilke and F1’s own Motorsports Division, will run along Jeddah’s seafront and race on the city’s existing roads around the narrow costal land.
F1 managing director of motorsports Ross Brawn believes the layout has the potential to produce exciting racing.
“It’s always very exciting to release the details of a new circuit & the Jeddah Street Circuit is no exception,” Brawn said.
“We have worked closely with the team at Tilke and with the promoter to ensure we have a track that provides exciting wheel to wheel racing for our fans and challenges all of the drivers.
“The design brings out the best of a modern street circuit but also has fast paced free flowing areas that will create fast speeds and overtaking opportunities. The setting is incredible, on the Red Sea, and we can’t wait to see the cars on track in December.”
The Saudi Arabia Grand Prix is scheduled to host the penultimate round of the 2021 season, and will join Bahrain, Singapore and Abu Dhabi in holding its grand prix at night time.
