F1 to continue We Race As One initiative in 2021 but without rainbow branding

Formula 1 has revealed it will not use the rainbow branding for its We Race As One campaign in 2021 after outlining its new plans for the initiative.

F1 launched the campaign last year in acknowledgment of the worldwide fight against COVID-19 and in support of tackling all forms of racial discrimination.

A rainbow was used as the symbol for the initiative, with the branding featuring heavily at every circuit during the 2020 season and on teams’ cars.

But on Wednesday, F1 announced the rainbow logo will be dropped for 2021 following an update on its objectives with We Race As One.

A statement from F1 read: “This season the rainbow will no longer feature alongside the #WeRaceAsOne platform.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic is still an ongoing battle, we are focussing the platform on the three core pillars of our Environment, Social and Corporate Governance strategy.

“Those pillars are sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and community. These areas are a priority for the sport where progress has already been made but with more commitments to be delivered in coming months and years.”

Prior to each race in 2020 drivers showed their support in the fight against racism by kneeling at the front of the grid, with F1 confirming this would remain in the pre-race schedule for 2021.

“We plan to include a moment before the start of each race this season to show our united support for important issues and will be discussing this with the drivers and the teams ahead of the start of the season.”

F1 said the focus of We Race As One will be a continued push to increase diversity and inclusivity within motorsport.

The series will continue to pursue its target to be carbon neutral by 2030, reducing single-use plastic and lowering how much freight can be transported to races, as it hopes to create “a clear path towards sustainably fuelled hybrid engines”.

The addition of the all-female W Series to its support bill this year is part of F1’s plans to grow awareness of the category and the FIA’s Women in Motorsport initiatives.

“Our We Race As One platform was very effective at raising the awareness of socially important issues and our steadfast commitment to make a positive change,” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said.

“We are very proud of it and the teams have embraced it fully. While our commitment through words to tackling issues like sustainability and diversity in our sport are important, it is our actions that we will be judged on.

“We have already made good progress on our sustainability plans and you will see strong actions being executed this year across all three of our WRAO pillars. We know we must continue to move forward on these issues and the whole sport is united in doing this in the months and years ahead.”
