Jordan would show ‘replaceable’ Hamilton the door at Mercedes

Ex-Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan says he would show Lewis Hamilton the door if he was boss of Mercedes amid the ongoing delay with his contract.

Hamilton, who’s latest Mercedes deal ran out at the end of last year, opted to put negotiations on hold in order to focus on securing both 2020 world titles.

While talks begun over a new contract during the off-season, no agreement has been reached, with no explanation why nothing has been signed.

Reports have suggested both parties are far apart regarding terms of salary, in what is likely to be the seven-time world champion’s final contract before he retires.

With just two months until the start of the 2021 season, Jordan believes Hamilton should accept the terms Mercedes is offering and felt the Briton should be made aware that “everybody is replaceable”.

“Apparently the parties disagree on the terms,” Jordan told F1 Insider. “I just heard that Lewis wants more than Mercedes is willing to pay. It’s also about sharing the team’s income and having an influential role in the Mercedes group.

“If I were the boss of Daimler, I would show him the door: Either you drive on our terms or you go.

“I would also tell him what Bernie Ecclestone said after Ayrton Senna’s death. Even if Bernie was shocked and sad like everyone else, he was the first to regain his composure and said to us: ‘Now stop whining: Everybody is replaceable.’ Lewis should know that by now.”

Jordan also shared his view of Aston Martin singing Sebastian Vettel over Sergio Perez for 2021, feeling the move is a “mistake” given the German’s “pathetic” form at Ferrari.

“I like him [Vettel] a lot, but I think Aston Martin made a mistake in signing him. The last two years against [Charles] Leclerc at Ferrari have been pathetic. I don’t know why he looked so bad, he won four world titles. But I think he’s past his peak. In any case, I would have kept Perez.”
